When is it time to replace a hedge?

This hedge is in a fine neighborhood where the people keep their yards neat and the garage doors closed.
The home owners planted this hedge to screen their house from the street, and it probably did a good job for 20  plus years. Now ,however, you can see the front door, the kitchen window, and the bedroom blinds plain as day from the street. This landscape element is ready for retirement.

It's easy to become blind to your surroundings. Even if you are not attached to you grounds it's a good idea
to give them a walk about every year or so. It's cheaper to keep things looking good than to have to  darg them back from the brink.
